Virtualization: One Guy’s Journey

A while back, last October in fact, I presented at the Edmonton VMUG. Being my first public presentation I wanted to keep things simple and familiar. I decided my topic should be the virtualization journey I’ve been on these many years. A big picture view of how and when I’ve met virtualization, leading to the environment I help design and manage today.

The presentation covers the evolution of the virtualization infrastructure at my places of work, beginning with client-side virtualization and leading to the enterprise. We’ll meet GSX in the wild, and a migration to the popular VI3. There will be the addition of virtual desktops, but not VDI. We’ll endure the great “status quo”, a split-personality migration (vCenter 5 & ESX4? Oh my!) and finally the implementation of vCloud Suite in a multi-datacenter environment.

You can find the presentation below, however to read the descriptive text you’ll need to visit its Haiku Deck page. Enjoy!
